Polestar, the Swedish electric performance car brand, has opened a new dedicated design studio in Gothenburg, Sweden, to develop its distinctive and innovative design language further. The new studio, located in the same building as Polestar's headquarters, will be led by Polestar's head of design, Maximilian Missoni.
The new studio will focus on creating the next generation of Polestar models, starting with the Polestar 3, an electric performance SUV that will debut in 2023. The Polestar 3 will be based on Volvo's Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which will also underpin future Volvo and Geely models. The Polestar 3 will feature a sleek and aerodynamic coupe-like silhouette, a spacious and minimalist interior, and advanced technology and connectivity.
The Polestar 3 will also showcase Polestar's new design philosophy, which is based on three core principles: pure, progressive, and performance. According to Missoni, these principles reflect Polestar's vision of creating electric cars that are beautiful, functional, and exciting.
"Pure means that we strip away everything that is unnecessary and focus on the essence of the product. Progressive means that we challenge conventions and explore new possibilities. Performance means optimizing every aspect of the car to deliver an exhilarating driving experience," Missoni said.
Missoni added that Polestar's design approach is also influenced by its Scandinavian heritage, which values simplicity, sustainability, and harmony with nature. "We want to create timeless and elegant cars but also respect the environment and the resources we use. We want to create cars that are not only good for driving but also good for living," he said.
The new design studio will also enable Polestar to collaborate more closely with its engineering and development teams, as well as with external partners and suppliers. This will allow Polestar to streamline its design process and ensure high quality and consistency across its products.
Polestar's CEO, Thomas Ingenlath, said that the new design studio is a testament to Polestar's commitment to design excellence and innovation. "Design is at the heart of everything we do at Polestar. It sets us apart from other car brands and makes us stand out in the electric car market. With the new design studio, we have a dedicated space where we can unleash our creativity and push the boundaries of electric car design," he said.
Polestar currently has two models in its portfolio: the Polestar 1, a limited-edition plug-in hybrid grand tourer that was produced between 2019 and 2021, and the Polestar 2, a fully electric fastback that was launched in 2020. The Polestar 2 has received critical acclaim for its design, performance, and technology and has won several awards, including the German Car of the Year 2021.
The Polestar 3 will be the third model in Polestar's lineup and will be followed by more models in the future. Polestar aims to become a global leader in electric performance cars and to inspire people to switch to more sustainable mobility solutions.
