MG is a brand with a rich history of producing affordable and fun roadsters, such as the iconic MGB and the more recent TF. But in recent years, the British marque has been focusing on practical and budget-friendly electric vehicles, such as the MG4 hatchback and the MG5 estate. While these models have helped MG grow its sales and reputation in the UK and China, they have also left some fans wondering if the brand has lost its sports car soul.
That's why the announcement of the MG Cyberster, a new electric roadster that will debut in 2024, is such a piece of exciting news for car enthusiasts. The MG Cyberster is not only a stunning tribute to MG's heritage but also a bold statement of its future vision. It combines classic design cues with cutting-edge technology, such as a gaming-inspired cockpit, 5G connectivity, and an intelligent all-electric architecture that promises a range of 800 km (500 miles) and a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of less than three seconds.
The MG Cyberster electric sports car was first revealed as a concept car in 2021, drawing rave reviews from critics and fans alike. The concept featured a sleek and futuristic design, with round "Magic Eye" headlights that open when switched on, a slim grille that doubles as an air duct, a laser belt LED strip along the side, and a squared-off Kammback tail with digital brake lights that resemble the British flag. The concept also had an open-top speedster layout with two seats and no roof.
However, leaked patent images and spy shots have shown that the production version of the MG Cyberster will be slightly toned down from the concept but still retain its distinctive character. The production car will have a folding fabric roof, more conventional headlights, a smaller rear diffuser, and different wheel designs. It will also be slightly larger than the concept, measuring 4535 mm long, 1913 mm wide, and 1329 mm high - slightly bigger than the Porsche 718 Boxster and significantly larger than the Mazda MX-5.
The interior of the MG Cyberster electric sports car will be vastly different from other MG models, featuring a driver-centric layout with a yoke-style steering wheel and several digital screens for infotainment and driving data. The main screen is likely to be a 10.25-inch touchscreen taken from the MG4, while the screen behind the steering wheel will display key vehicle information in a minimalist style. The seats will have floating head restraints and red leather handles that echo the laser belt on the exterior.
